Joan Fortier

Obituary of Joan Mavis Fortier

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joan Fortier (nee Preston), peacefully in New Liskeard on Friday, May 7th, 2021. Joan (1933-2021) married to Elphege (Al) Fortier (1932-1999) was the glue that held the Fortier clan together. Quietly referred to as St. Joan, Mom raised 5 sons and 1 daughter - Larry (Charlotte), Pauline, Ron (Donna), Mike (Sonya), Greg (Heather) and Rick (Anne). Mom was the proud grandmother to Lynsay, Joshua, Jessica, Kelly, Stephan, Madelaine, Dylan and Chelsea and great grandmother to Layne, Zoe, Harper, Liv, Sinclair and Hazel. We will always miss you. Joan was a beautiful, gentle yet strong, thoughtful, kind-hearted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, neighbour, work and volunteer colleague and so much more. She was a card shark, a quiet competitor who enjoyed games with family and friends, loved teas, strawberry socials, travelling, the cottage, her novels and many tv series. Her home was always warm and welcoming to all. Mom was quick to laugh, loved music, dancing and when younger, she and Dad shared an active social life. When her family responsibilities lessened and she was widowed, Mom threw herself into the community and into a circle of great, caring, fun friends. Her primary volunteer efforts included the Catholic Women’s League, the Temiskaming Hospital Auxiliary, the New Liskeard Public Library and many more. To the Temiskaming Hospital staff: your care and compassion was exemplary. Thank you. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Temiskaming Hospital Palliative Care Suite (705-647-1088 ext. 2223) , or to Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish (705-647-5035) are gratefully appreciated. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a service in her memory and a celebration of her life will be held at a future date and time. Rest in peace, Mom.
