Mary Grant

Obituary of Mary Grant

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mary Grant, wife of Hugh Grant for 68 years.  It was an unexpected death Monday, July 29th, 2019, at the Temiskaming Hospital.

Mary will be missed by her husband, Hugh, and her four children, Wendy of St. Louis, Missouri, Duncan of Fernie, BC, Ginny of Banff, AB, and Vicki of New Liskeard.

Mary was a hard worker and started as a secretary to the principal of the Mining School.

She married and later left her job to have a family.  Much of the child rearing was done on her own as Hugh was out of town for many months of the year.  Mary had many boarders while living on Lakeshore Road.  Mary and Hugh later built two homes together at the end of Dawson Point Road, on the lakeside.  She had huge gardens and growing vegetables was an experience for her. Bigger wasn’t always better and deciding what was a weed and what was a vegetable plant was a guessing game.

Once her children were grown, Mary went back to work for John Butler at the Agricultural College.  Mary wanted to move to town and Hugh reluctantly followed.

Mary was an avid supporter of the Presbyterian Church and she headed many bazaars and did kitchen duty often.

Mary’s legacy is the memories she left to her grandchildren: Drew and Grant (Wendy’s), Byron, Alyssa, Laura and Leighton (Duncan’s), Nic and Tatum (Ginny’s), and Adam, Melissa, Karla and Jordan (Vicki’s).

These memories were and are at the cottage on Lake Temagami where Mary swam with the grandchildren, made notorious cinnamon buns and often fed eighteen from her small kitchen.

Mary also leaves behind thirteen great-grandchildren.

Out of deep pain, the flags at both the home and cottage are flying at half-mast.  God speed.

The children of Hugh & Mary Grant invite family and friends to a celebration of their mother’s life at the Perrin Funeral Chapel on Saturday, September 14, 2019 with visitation at 2 p.m. and memorial service at 3 p.m.
