Obituary of Mabel Mason

Following a six-month illness, Mabel Mason died peacefully on April 26, 2010, of natural causes, at the Temiskaming Hospital. Previous to her illness, Mrs. Mason had been living on her farm at 835 Dawson Point Road. She was born to Arthur John and Elizabeth Overton in their log house in Harley Township on July 20, 1912. She attended S.S. #1 Harley Township School. Her very first job was working for Mrs. Ross of Thornloe, milking her number of cows and helping with meals (including making pies). After that she cleaned the school for a period of time. Later on she worked for several clients in town, housekeeping, eventually meeting Bill Mason whom she married on August 26, 1935, at the Anglican Church in Cobalt. As her family grew older, Mrs. Mason contracted to drive R.R. #3, New Liskeard, starting off with a horse and sleigh until roads were plowed, then proceeded to pass her license for a car. Mrs. Mason did this job for over 25 years then her husband took it over. She then went to work for New Liskeard Hospital on Hessle Street, retiring about 1972. She was also a member of the Harris Leisure Club. Mrs. Mason was predeceased by her husband of 63-and-a-half years, W.K. (Bill) Mason on February 16, 1999 in New Liskeard; her parents; siblings William A. Overton (Mollie), Clarice Campbell (Arthur), Ralph Overton, and Doris Gannon (Don); sons Donald in 2007 and David in 2005. She is survived by her daughters Claire White (Mel McNaughton) and Pat Maille; daughter-in-law Betty Mason; grandchildren Cindy Welsh (Ken), Jody Kostiuk (Les), Shane White, Stacey Archambault (Mike), Vaughn Maille, Kimberley Mason (Terry), Shannon Mason, Manse (wife Sarah) Mason; great-grandchildren Willis and Tyler Welsh, Marisa, Angela and Tegan Kostiuk, Haylee and Reid Archambault, Ashley and Alex Maille and Harley Perdue.
