Obituary of John Evans

John "Jack" Evans John "Jack" Evans died on July 20, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the loving and devoted husband of Dulcie (McKinnnon) for 52 years, who feels an immeasurable loss. Much loved father of Lori Bell and father-in-law of Tim O'Shaughnessy. Treasured grandfather of Christopher and Amy Bell and Jennifer O'Shaughnessy. Dear brother of Parker Evans of Owen Sound, Doris Stewart of Belleville and Grace (Frank) Thom of Sudbury. He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased in 1965, by his baby son Mitchell John and in 2002, by his daughter Sharon. Predeceased by his sisters Marjorie North of Kentville, Nova Scotia, Norma Poole of Kingston and Helen Richardson of Sarnia. Mr. Evans was born March 11, 1928 to William and Kathleen Evans of New Liskeard. At the age of 16, he began his career sailing on the Great Lakes. In 1956 he obtained his Masters or Captain of a Steamship Certificate, which allowed him to captain a ship on the Great Lakes. He retired from sailing in 1958. He then began working at Woods Hardware Limited, later becoming manager for several years. From 1962, Mr. Evans worked for the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada, selling life insurance. He was a Master Life Underwriter for many years. He was twice President of the Life Underwriters Association of Temiskaming. He was presented with a plaque by the Life Underwriters Association in appreciation of his many years of dedication and service. Mr. Evans was a Mason. He was initiated into the Temiskaming Lodge in 1956 and became Master of the Temiskaming Lodge in 1964. In 2008, he was honoured for his 50 years as a Freemason. Mr. Evans was a member of St. Paul's United Church and served on the church board for many years. His favourite role was Welcoming Elder, greeting members at the door on Sunday morning. For two years, he represented Twin Lakes on the Cottagers Association. He was responsible for the road sign identification at Twin, Fairy, Pike and Bartle Lakes. Mr. Evans was a good and happy man. He always had a smile and a wave for everyone, and usually a joke. He genuinely cared about people. Wednesday afternoon was time with his buddies, playing cards and sharing many a laugh. Most importantly, he was a devoted family man. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for his family. He has left such a huge void. His hugs will be greatly missed. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with the memorial service conducted by Rev. Judith Visser at St. Paul's United Church on Saturday, July 25, 2009. Cremation has taken place. Burial will follow in a private family service. The family says "We are confident that Sharon and Jack are together again."
